Lower ABV This is the kind of wine that comes about when a crazy talented young winemaker decides to have fun with leftovers. The wine starts with Anaïs Ricome’s savory Syrah Cerise made from grapes grown in cool, high-altitude, sites near Nates and the Mediteranian Sea. The Syrah is a bit light in color, so after fermentation starts, she bleeds – or “saignee” – some of the juice off so the skins can darken what’s left. This bright pink, bubbling, must ferments dry in steel and gives lots of plush, velvet, mouthfeel.
But lacks a bit of oompf. So Anaïs also ferments some Grenache Noir on the skins for two days and, after pressing, solo in steel and does the same with a bit of Pinot Noir. Blended together, this trio makes Rosephine, a boisterous, juicy, nicely fruited and yet all the way dry happiness bomb of a pink wine. As Anaïs suggests you can certainly pair it up nicely “with Mediterranean risotto, piquillos, and grilled dishes.” And especially pair it up with good time with friends.
For You If: You don’t need fancy labels, famous movie stars, or well-known vineyards to make you comfortable drinking pink wine – you just need it to taste good and make you and your friends smile; you enjoy a more berry/currant flavor profile vs the peach/watermelon notes of Provencal pinks.
Not For You If: You’re looking for something austere or “classy” – this is more a slobbering Labrador Retriever than a well-groomed Irish Setter of a wine.
