This just really good Chardonnay and should not be missed. Even though, if you know a bit about Burgundy, you’d be surprised to see “Chorey” and “Blanc” on the same label. Chorey-les-Beaune has always been a red wine village, taking advantage of limestone-laced clay soils that Pinot Noir loves. But here and there you’ll find patches of vineyard where the limestone that has washed down from the Grand Cru hill of Corton is more prevalent. That’s Chardonnay country, and over the years Pascal and Alain Maillard have replanted four of these patches to create their Chorey-les-Beaune Blanc.
And what a Burgundy Chardonnay it is! lovely wine just to look at, showing crystal clear, shimmering, bronze/gold of exceptional clarity. Pretty darn lovely to smell, too, with pretty scents of peach, apple, sweet spice and butter toasted hazelnuts. In the mouth, it’s very pure and almost crisp, with Anjou pear, citrus, and golden apple fruit over a bit of buttery hazelnut richness. The finish is terrific, with a burst of salty, chalky, minerality and gentle grip at first followed by a burst of nectarine, candied lemon peel and hazelnut flavors that linger nicely. Nothing wrong with just sipping this solo – a very classy cocktail white! – but it will shine even more brightly at table with scallops, roasted poultry and salty cheeses. Yum.
