Look, this wine is stupid good Chardonnay and should not be missed. Even though, if you know a bit about Burgundy, you’d be surprised to see “Chorey” and “Blanc” on the same label. Chorey-les-Beaune has always been a red wine village, taking advantage of limestone-laced clay soils that Pinot Noir loves. But here and there you’ll find patches of vineyard where the limestone that has washed down from the Grand Cru hill of Corton is more prevalent. That’s Chardonnay country, and over the years Pascal and Alain Maillard have replanted four of these patches to create their Chorey-les-Beaune Blanc.
And what a Burgundy Chardonnay it is! Right out of the gate you’ll find intense aromas of sliced pear, nectarine, lemon, hazelnut and a hint of cream. Take a sip and the flavors of ripe stone fruit, lime, crushed rock, and sweet spice fill up your mouth before a nice citrus kick that really pops the flavors through a dusty finish. This is both generous and vivid with the 15% new oak showing only as a tiny bit of spice. It’s not really proper to call an authentic, terroir-driven, white Burgundy a “pounder.” But your biggest challenge here will be to make the bottle last all the way through a dinner for two now – 2030.
