The winery makes multiple bottlings from the second-oldest vineyard in Ribbon Ridge, one that has 365 degree exposures as it slopes down the hill from its crown and is uniquely warm and calm for the AVA. This is one of two Estate Pinots that tell the story of the vineyard in total, here focusing on vines aged 12-24 years. Jim notes that, “We have discovered that at around 25 years of vine age we often see a change in the vines’ nature as they become bigger and healthier plants with deep root systems. Before this happens, the vines tend to produce fruit that is bigger, bolder, plumper and more succulent at a young age than the older vines’ wines. Therefore the Estate bottling is the richest and most precocious of all our Estate Vineyard Pinot Noirs. “
With so much of the Estate vineyard now pushing the 25 year-old mark, the quality of this wine has soared in recent years. It opens with deep and dark scents of black cherry, Bing cherry, cola and a little earth that turns spicier and earthier with air. The mouthfeel is great, round and with a bit of a glycerin feel, with loads of black fruit, cola, spice and dark floral accents. The tannins are substantial but silky and the finish fresh and very generous. Certainly delicious now, but no rush. As Jim noted last year, “bottlings dating back to 2003 and 2002 are showing incredibly well at this point.”
For You If: You love great Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and want to enjoy an exemplar of marine sedimentary soil dark fruit and vivid texture at a fine value price; you’re looking for Pinot Noir with class and finesse that’s ready to go tonight.
Not For You If: You’re after something fat or lush – this has a terrific texture and plenty of presence on the palate, but stays very pure and a bit juicy through the supple, easy, finish.
