A great Syrah blends dark black fruit and savory mineral, roasted meat, graphite aromas and flavors in ratios that vary based on site and season. In the Central Coast, long-time Rhone Ranger Qupe captures the California version perfectly with pretty ripe blackberry fruit and subtle hints of savory meat and earth. In 2020, it’s pretty gulpable and can even take a light chill, but big enough to handle lamb and steak and complex enough to justify slowing down to pay attention. 

For You If:  You like your California reds to be fruit forward but not all fruit; you like your reds big in flavor but not heavy; you’re in the market for a red that is interesting and will please a crowd; you like screwcaps.

Not For You If:  You like to taste the oak and feel the tannic grip of your California reds; a wine one might say has a bit of “purple” flavor isn’t for you; you don’t like anything earthy/savory in your reds; you hate screwcaps.
