Five straight vintages, five straight 93 point ratings (4 from Wine Enthusiast, one from Suckling), and this 2021 will join the parade soon. Once again it lines up nicely against the “big names” of Kamptal like Pichler, Schloss Gobelsburg, and Brundlmayer. But the prices remain much, MUCH, lower, courtesy of the modesty of the Steininger family and direct-import model of importer Klaus Wittauer.
For all the consistency of scores, this is our favorite vintage yet from vines growing near the Loisium wine museum down the hill from the Steiningers' winery. The contrast of the ripe pear/apple fruit and luscious mid-palate texture vs the salty mineral, chalk and white pepper savory notes is captivating. Lovely stuff and well under-priced.
For You If: You're after Gruner's classic stone fruit and white pepper flavors with more body and richness; you need a Chardonnay alternative that stops short of Sauvignon Blanc's super-intense fruitiness.
Not For You If: You're after something really crisp and mineral - this is more lush and round.
