Loibenberg is one of Wachau’s top Grüner Vineyards, which makes it one of Austria’s finest, too. Martin Mittelbach makes this from plots up and down the hill, melding the richer wine from lower slopes with richer soils with more taut and zesting juice from higher on the hill. This wine always shows a touch of lentil-like nuttiness, a pop of sugar-snap pea and white pepper freshness and a compelling blend of richness and drive. It will just get better over the next 10 years, but who can wait? Pop it open now with a heart vegetable or chicken stew and you’ll be delighted.
For You If: You like white wine with a bit of something savory – herb, lentil, even bone broth – to go with orchard and stone fruit and that is both richly textured and nicely crisp at the end.
Not For You If: You’re looking for easy-drinking party wine – this is plenty inviting, but there’s too much going on for just quaffing.
