Lower ABV The 2020 edition was one of our best-selling Burgundies of 2023. The 2022 is better. La Roche de Solutre is an exposed slice of limestone rising up above the vineyards of this portion of the Macon, reminding you that the soils here have the chalky marl so perfect for terrific Burgundy Chardonnay. The vines for this wine grow on a hilltop facing the big rock in between St Veran and the village and 1er cru vines of Pouilly Fuisse. Winemaking is simple and designed to get the quality of the site, the 20 year-old vines, and the great 2022 vintage into bottle – cool pressing, limited sulfur, 90% done in tank and 10% in oak for a just-right touch of spice.
In 2022, it smells rich and deep and full of ripe pear, apricot, toasted hazelnut and sweet spice aromas. It dances its way across your palate with both great energy and terrific generosity. The pear tart, spice and hazelnut flavors are broad and succulent and the light citric and dusty chalk minerality are enlivening and keep things in focus. The mouthwatering finish lingers, leaving you completely satisfied…and hungry for another sip!
For You If: You’re looking for Burgundy (or any!) Chardonnay you can serve with acclaim to a crowd and keep on hand for regular sipping with or without food; you want to taste the Chardonnay grape and place and not be distracted by oak or butter notes.
Not For You If: You’re after a noticeable oak influence on your Chardonnay; you prefer your Chardonnay either Chablis-steely or California ripe – this is in between.
