Like the Grand Cru hill of Corton that overlooks its vineyards, most Ladoix is red. But about 20% of both the region’s and Ravaut’s vines grow on cooler, more limestone-rich, sites that cry out for Chardonnay. Vincent makes several different white Ladoix cuvees, but this one from several sites north of Corton was our favorite for flavor, character and value.
The aromas here are big, bold, and inviting, featuring notes of rich and buttery pear tart, nectarine, caramel, hazelnut and a subtle hint of white flowers. In the mouth the wine is round and broad while staying nicely clear and transparent, delivering flavors of bruleed nectarine, butter toasted hazelnuts, salted caramel and the lemon curd character so often found in whites from north of Beaune. The flavors flow smoothly into a generous, lengthy, finish with flavors of lemon custard, caramel, stone fruit, wet stone and a subtle hint of salt lingering. Fun to drink right now both with and without food and doing nicely in cellar for the next 5-7 years.
