Released in 2013 and now a full 22 year-old, this is a lovely, rich, and warming take on fully mature Rioja. You’ll find a bouquet of aged Tempranillo aromas like underbrush, sweet spice, earth, tobacco and subtle red fruit on the nose. On the palate, the tannins are wonderfully mellowed, as are the flavors of roasted raspberries, damp earth and a fistful of mulling spice. The brightness of the acidity keeps things fresh and balanced. Serve it with something complex and rich.
For You If: You’re a fan of mature red wine or want to discover what happens to a red that started out rich, almost jammy, and then developed in bottle for 15+ years.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the leaner, more acidic, style of older Rioja from a “traditional” house like Lopez de Heredia – this is more gentle and round.
