Organic/Bio This is probably the single best Bordeaux value in the shop right now, mainly because the vintage is brilliant and the estate sells all they make without participating in the Bordeaux critics’ circus. From a terrific, rocky, vineyard in Graves, it’s roughly equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with around 5% Petit Verdot and a splash of Cab Franc, all aged in around 50% new oak. The concentration, richness of fruit, touch of chocolate and supple texture will appeal to Napa Cabernet fans, but the sleek mouthfeel, refined herbal and cedar accents, and band of fine minerality say “Bordeaux” loud and clear. The finish is long and firm, so this can certainly improve over the next 10-15 years. But silky and supple enough to shine right now with grilled/roasted meats and veggies. Seriously delicious in a black-fruited, deep, and creamy-firm kind of way.
For You If: You’re after a terrific 2019 Bordeaux to enjoy now and later; you love the fruit and accessibility of Napa Cab but want a bit more food-friendly focus; you’re hunting for a bargain – because this would be recommended at 2x the price.
Not For You If: I dunno – you don’t like Cabernet/Merlot blends no matter how delicious they are? Maybe you want a wine that can only be sipped solo or only served with food vs both/either? You don’t want 14% alcohol no matter how balanced and pure?
