Organic/Bio For decades, the Dekeyne family sold their 5 HA of grapes from the Cote de Sezanne to large houses in Epernay and Reims until brothers Gael and Baptiste recently began to bottle their own Champagne. It's outstanding, including this bottling from a plot the family planted in 1962, the first new vines in Sezanne planted since phylloxera. It's wildly exciting, serving up layers of roasted lemon, raw bread dough and ginger aromas and then lemon, toasted nuts, Anjou pear, chalk and more on the racy, tightly focused, palate. Decisively dry (just 2 g/l dosage) but not austere or hard, this finishes with excellent persistence and charm. One of the finest Champagne values in the shop and we're not sure the fellow we heard say this was kind of a "junior Ulysse Collin" is wrong.
For You If: You love exploring under-appreciated Champagne regions and emerging (perhaps soon to be famous!) winegrowers, especially those nuts enough to farm certified biodynamic in the very tricky Champagne climate; you're looking for something incisive but not hard, deliniated but not austere.
Not For You If: You're after Champagne somewhere between "generous" and "broad" - this is full of flavor but tighly focused, even crisp; you perfer your Champagne to show the influence of wood - this is done all in steel.
