Lower ABV I certainly wouldn’t try to tell the 2023 Chauveau Pouilly Fume La Charmette apart from a $40+ Sancerre when tasting blind. Not surprising: its from the same Sauvignon Blanc grapes, Kimmeridgian marl and limestone soils and climate as Sancerre just across the Loire River. Benoit Chauveau is a master of capturing the white citrus, subtle fresh grass, and smoky “gunflint” mineral notes Sauvignon gives when grown and made with care here. We’re just bringing it to you for a LOT less than if the label said “Sancerre.’
The aromas of fresh lemon pulp, lemon oil, and early season peach are made even more attractive by a dusty limestone chalk note. The flavors are all citrus and green apple dusted in crushed limestone with a touch of the mineral note we try to describe with “gunflint” running along the sides of your mouth. And from start to finish, the texture is superb, with a sense of something silky/creamy nicely buffering the zippy acids that drive a long, fragrant, finish. This will shine at table with all kinds of seafood and shellfish, meld perfectly with ripe goat cheese, and delights just sipped all by itself. And if you don’t finish it all this summer, no worries – it will be better still over the next 2-3 years.
For You If: You love Sancerre and love getting it for under $30 even more; you enjoy wines with marvelously silky texture that finish with gentle, mouthwatering, grip; you’ve enjoyed Benoit’s terrific Coteaux Du Giennois Calcaire and want that experience a couple of levels up in concentration and finesse.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the wild tropical and grass notes of Marlborough Sauvignon – this is more restrained and elegant than that; you’re after a kiss of oak – this is done all in steel.
