Organic/Bio From the French Basque country, this is an “illegal” wine – 100% Cabernet Franc where the Irouleguy AOC requires at least some Tannat or other local grapes. Manual harvest, 15 days maceration and 18 months in old oak delivers richness of texture and lightness of feel to the crunchy red cherry and redcurrant fruit. A burst of long-aged cured tobacco and dash of espelette pepper gives complexity to a wine that is rich enough for food and gloriously thirst-quenching served with a chill.
For You If: You’re after a super-refreshing picnic or party red that delivers a bit more complexity and interest than you’d expect for the modest price; you enjoy Loire Valley Cabernet Franc with above-average ripeness and richness.
Not For You If: You’re after the intense black fruit of New World Cabernet Franc – this is more to the crunchy red-fruit end of the spectrum with fine, whippy, tannins.
