448 bottles produced. For years we’ve told you Silvia’s wines include “Garnacha Peluda,” aka “Hairy Grenache.” Peluda is a clone of Garnacha evolved to handle especially windy, dry, locations. The tiny hairs on each leaf allow the vine to take moisture from the air and then retract to keep water inside the plant when the wind comes up and air dries out. All things being equal, it gives a wine lighter in color and lower in alcohol than Garnacha Tinto and shows pretty strawberry fruit and just a hint of green tobacco and spice.
All things aren’t quite equal in this all Garnacha Peluda bottling from 60+ year-old vines growing on clay and slate soils on slopes above the village of Bellmunt del Priorat. The exposed, old, vines give painfully small yields of around 500 grams of grapes per plant (about one-third what normal old vine Garnacha gives), and are pretty much picked, crushed and made entirely by Silvia herself. The wine spends three months in amphora and then 10 months in new and second-use French oak (one “normal” and one very small cask).
You can tell it’s “Garnacha” but it’s definitely not like other Garnacha’s you’ve known! The aromas are wild – wild strawberry, berry blossom, hazelnut, raspberry, wild herb, sweet spice and more. The wine’s texture is fascinating, almost glyceryl in its richness and slickness before the tannins come up to give the wine shape and definition. The intense flavors of strawberry pie, kirsch, red licorice, earth and slate fill your mouth and linger nicely on the long, detailed, finish. This should drink well for a decade if you can wait. Delicious, fun and very rare!
