Everything interesting about Australia’s wine trajectory is on display here in this deeply concentrated yet remarkably fresh Grenache. Sierra Reed moved from modeling to Survivor to worldwide winemaking training to opening Reed Wines in 2015. Here she makes single varietal wines from single vineyards with minimal manipulation an no other “house style.” In the very small 2022 vintage, her Barossa Grenache is light in color, perfumed, and Pinot-like in feel and very Grenache-like in bold fruit and grip. A compelling wine to enjoy with duck, lamb, or anything with loads of thyme, rosemary and garlic. Yum.
For You If: You want to taste where Australian wine is going and find the education delicious; you love the flavors of Grenache but not the high alcohol (this is a healthy 13.5%); you enjoy high-elevation Grenache from places like Gredos or Terrasses du Larzac – no real elevation here, but similar in style and feel.
Not For You If: You’re after the big, fleshy, feel of Chateauneuf du Pape or the candied fruit most Australian Grenache shows – this is leaner, lighter, fresher and more mineral.
