Organic/Bio Lower ABV The difference between a really good “village” Gevrey (like Terroir du Domaine) and a true 1er Cru should be ripeness, concentration and power. Which is very much what you’ll find here, if in the more elegant and less extracted style of vintage 2021. Lauvaut St. Jacques is above the village of Gevrey and has a south/south-east exposure that was especially helpful in 2021. Jerome’s half-acre of 80+ year-old vines are planted directly on bedrock through about a half-foot of pebbles, the kind of poor, infertile, soil where great Burgundy Pinot Noir shines.
You’ll immediately taste and smell the minerality here along with deeply ripe black cherry and raspberry fruit, fresh earth, and spicy mocha notes from 14 months or so in mostly new French oak. The wood is very much a grace note, though, with iron/crushed rock minerality and sweetly ripe fruit the star of the show. Excellent concentration and flesh in the mouth gives the wine a silky feel through the mid-palate before the fine, firm, generous tannins come up to shape the wine and leave raspberry blossom, fruit, earth and spice flavors lingering. It’s certainly tempting to drink this right now (about an hour in decanter works nicely), but it would be a shame not to hold back at least a little for 5 years of growth and then to enjoy over the decade after that. A terrific wine.
