Sometimes a wine really announces itself, which is what happens here as the first sniff says, "Gevrey Chambertin" with authority. Autumnal underbrush and iron ore minerality surround the fresh black cherry and berry fruit. On the palate, the fruit comes forward, washing across your taste buds with waves of Bing and black cherry flavor that initially obscure the deep, underlying, forest floor, rich earth and iron mineral flavors. There's plenty of tannin here, but it's super fine and refined, lifting up flavors that turn earthier again on a firm, sustained, finish with a tiny hint of something floral clinging nicely. From vines planted in 1920 and 1950 adjacent to Charmes-Chambertin and aged 18 months in 30% new French oak (not that you can taste any wood here). So delicious already it’s hard to resist and will go 15-20 years in cellar with ease.
For You If: You’d like a traditional – but accessible! – Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir with 1er Cru concentration and class at a village wine price.
Not For You If: You think really good red Burgundy has to be hard to drink when young – this will age with grace for a couple of decades but is also compelling tonight.
