Organic/Bio Kermit Lynch seems to be in the mood to have some fun with this wine he made to recall the kind of casual, all-purpose, easygoing, pre-climate-change, Cotes du Rhones of the 1970s and 1980s. It’s 56% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 7% Carignan and 2% Cinsault from bush vines growing on the plateau of Signargues, fully destemmed, and made in concrete. There’s a kind of juicy joyfulness here with tons of rich red and black fruit and mouthfilling size but nothing heavy or thick or sweet. Finishes easy and soft with a lovely hint of garigue (wild rosemary, lavender, thyme) and earth. Give it a light chill if you want and enjoy with burgers, pizza, grilled veggies, even salmon. Just a delightful wine and a very, very, nice price.
For You If: You’re Doug’s age or more and remember fondly when Cotes du Rhone was the “safe” red to buy for any party or meal; you’re looking for a wine that’s as fun as the playful label.
Not for You If: You’re after the thickness/weight more typical of of southern Rhone reds these days; you’re after a low-alcohol selection – this is the 14.5% that Rhone grapes usually need to express ripeness but carries it easily and with style.
