Another delicious expression of mountain Garnacha from the hills outside Madrid and Gredos master Daniel Landi (here working with partner Curro Bareño. The light color and blend of delicate mouthfeel and intense red fruit flavors is typical of Gredos, but this wine is from limestone (instead of granite) and the village of Méntrida, just outside Sierra de Gredos. With a bit of air, the flavors get super rich and tannins turn refreshingly chalky, making your mouth water and hand reach out for something salty to eat. A whiff of sliced button mushroom and hint of bitter orange just add to the complexity and fun. Not exactly like any other Grenache-based red you’ve ever had, but still decisively Grenache – and a good one at that.
For You If: You’re the kind of wine drinker who cares as much about how a wine feels as it travels through and leaves your palate as you do about how it tastes – although you like the intense ripe red berry flavors of Grenache and think a touch of something savory just adds to the fun.
Not For You If: You’re after “easy” or “smooth” – there’s grip here, especially on first opening where the wine is downright firm, balanced by a glyceryl texture that somehow feels light and full-bodied at the same time.
