Organic/Bio Organic farming, wonderfully ripe Sangiovese (80%) and other local grapes, and super-clean, low-intervention, winemaking come together here in a great all-purpose Italian red that will move from party to pizza to Turkey Day feasts with ease. The flavors – ripe cherry and red berries with spice and subtle tobacco undertones – are just what you expect from Sangiovese. And the structure is classic, too, with a nice wake-up note of acidity up front and dusty, mouthcoating, tannins on the back.
What’s not so normal for Sangiovese is the rich, round, soft and supple mouth feel. Without any heaviness, this is a wine that really fills our mouth and feels rich, plush and almost velvety. There’s more than enough structure for this to handle classic Sangiovese table-mates like pasta, pizza and even steak. But the broad feel and tiny squirt of freshening cranberry on the finish make this a great pre, post and dinner partner for Thanksgiving, too! All at a heck of a value price.
For You If: You enjoy the flavors of classic Italian Sangiovese and want that without hard edges or excessively firm grip – this is nicely round and really flows; you like the mouthfeel and generosity of a really good Cotes du Rhone but want Sangiovese’s cherry fruit, spice and subtle tobacco notes – that’s what this does!
Not for You If: You’re after the kind of intense acid/tannin structure that makes Chianti Classico a great steak and cellar wine – this is softer, rounder, and more immediate.
