Lower ABV Familiar story here: Mexican teenager falls in love with making wine in Northern Mexico, moves to Australia to learn more, makes a carbonic Shiraz fruit bomb that turns into the best selling Australian export in Mexico, sells the company and launches a new winery in tin shack to make high acid, organic, whites and reds from unusual grapes near McLaren Vale. Ok, maybe not so familiar.
Here's Mauricio Ruiz Cantú's main white, a blend of mostly Vermentino plus Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris with 10% of the wine seeing skin contact and all aged in steel. Weird, for sure, but also delicious. The orange and tangerine Verdejo fruit marries with the white and pink citrus of Vermentino beautifully and a dose of extra texture and light tannins from the skin contact keep the whole thing focused and dry, all at just 12.4% alcohol.
For You If: You're craving an Australian wine made by a Mexican guy from mostly Italian and Spanish grapes; you're after a wine with plenty of fruit that's decisively not fruity and will shine with seafood and salsa.
Not For You If; You like to know what you're getting before you taste - this wild ride is not that!
