Called Grenache in France, Garnacha is native to Spain and has been a source of great value, all-purpose, hearty reds for years. As in France’s Rhone Valley, it delivers big red berry fruit, a generous and mouthfilling texture, a whiff of somethings herbal and/or floral, and enough structure to stand up to big food but not get in the way of casual sipping. And when it comes from off-the-beaten path locations and vines planted decades ago when land and labor were cheaper still, it does all that at great prices.
That’s pretty much the story of Zestos Garnacha. It’s from the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos mountains outside Madrid, a once important wine zone that fell into obscurity in the late 19th century and that is just now being “rediscovered’ for the quality of its Garnacha. The vines here were planted in 1950 and 1970 in bone dry, barren, soils where they don’t require a lot of care or attention. And the wine combines Garnacha’s hearty texture and bold red fruit with the sense of transparency and berry blossom top notes that are attracting so many hip winemakers to Gredos these days. At this price, it’s a no-brainer year-round red and especially useful in summer when it shines brightly with a light chill.
For You If: You’re after a gutsy, not heavy, summery red with plenty of fruit and a gentle grip at the end; you want a chillable red for hot weather; you just love a great deal!
Not For You If: You’re after the flavor of oak in your red – this is all tank; you’re looking for a wine that feels thick and heavy – this is big, but feels lighter and less dense than most Spanish Garnacha or Rhone wines like Chateauneuf du Pape.
