Each year this benchmark Banyuls estate holds back a single barrel of Banyuls from its oldest vines and allowed to age in cask until ready to sell. Like the younger Colloque Les Hors d’Age, the ripe Grenache grapes were crushed and began fermentation until a jolt of brandy was added to stabilize the wine with residual sugar and extract more flavor and depth. Then one barrel of the young wine was filled, placed in the back of the cellar, and allowed to age without topping up until this was bottled last year.
Like any good Banyuls, there’s plenty of rich red cherry/strawberry fruit here and a deep base note of dark chocolate. The extra time in cask has added a touch of tawny to the color and a big dollop of caramelized nut aromas and flavors. The finish here is close to endless with just enough acidity to remain fresh and keep the flavor party going.
