Lower ABV Ninth-generation family member Franz Proidl had eyes on this site for Grüner decades ago, but his dad – the 8th generation steward of the estate – said it was too high and would freeze too often to make sense to plant. Franz went ahead, and the vineyard he planted and his son, 10th generation Patrick, vinifies makes astonishingly good GV.
As Suckling says in the 93 point review, it’s an “unusual Güner.” Not that it could be any other grape with it’s basked of orchard fruit, light fruit blossom, and spicy white pepper aromas and flavors. And mouthwatering structure and lightly salty minerality confirms it’s from a high, cool, site. What’s different is the creaminess of texture, achieved through skin contact before fermentation and aging on the lees (spent yeast cells) in large, old, barrels. Across the river in Wachau, this texture usually comes from higher alcohol levels and/or a touch of residual sugar. Here you get it at just 13% alcohol and with vivid dryness. The best sub-$50 Grüner we’ve tasted in years and a perfect complement to Thanksgiving dinner!
For You If: You enjoy excellent, dry, Grüner Veltliner and are looking for one that balances richness of texture with steely minerality and cut; you’re after a terrific companion for Thanksgining or fried or browned fish – this will sing!
Not For You If: You’re after something wildly fruity/aromatic like most Sauvignon Blanc or something where fruit is pretty subdued, like the wines of Switzerland or the French Alps.
"This unusual gruner veltliner is brimming with floral aromas and has a wonderful interplay of restrained creaminess, bright yellow apple and pear fruit and elegant acidity on the medium-bodied palate. Long, precise finish."
