Lower ABV Mathias Ruttenstock is one of the masters of Röschitz, the coolest portion of Austria’s Weinviertel, the world’s best GV growing area that also includes Kamptal, Wagram and Wachau. Mathias is a 4th generation winemaker who has won multiple awards and high ratings for his "Classic" and single-vineyard Ried Reipersberg bottlings. His total production is very small - just 1,500 cases per year - but the quality here is high enough that he was able to win the very the prestigious Grüner Veltliner Grand Prix in 2017.
With its cool climate and stony gravel and loess soils, Grüner Veltliner from Röschitz is snappier, more citrusy and spicier than in other famed regions. In 2023, though, Mathias managed to coax an extra layer of ripeness from his fruit while capturing minerality normally reserved for more prestigious sites in Kamptal and Wachau. Think aromas and flavors of pear and apple fruit dusted with green and yellow citrus zest and a sleek, racy, mouthfeel right on the edge of steely. Mineral dust and a burst of savory white pepper pop up on the dry, mouthwatering, finish.
For You If: You’re after the clean, fruit-driven, refreshment of wines like Pinot Grigio, Verdicchio, all steel Chardonnay and the like; you think getting one-third extra wine for no extra cost is a pretty cool deal.
Not For You If: You want the extravagant fruit of Sauvignon Blanc or the buttery richness of Chardonnay done in barrel.
