If Sylvain’s other white Burgundies are seriously good, his sparkling Cremant de Bourgogne is seriously fun. It’s a wine Sylvain makes to welcome friends to his home, to celebrate bud break, successful flowering, and both the start and finish of harvest. And, especially, to sip with his family while enjoying a long, languid, delightful Sunday lunch and afternoon on his back terrace or at Puligny Montrachet’s tiny caveau/wine bar. Not a bad template for all of us to use, too!
Not that there’s not some serious quality here. It’s 100% Chardonnay from younger vines in and around Puligny plus sites in the Cote Chalonnaise that Sylvain picks early and ferments in stainless steel. Then a friend who specializes in sparkling wine gives it the Champagne treatment, with second fermentation in bottle, aging around 10 months on the lees, and finishing clear, creamy, fresh and “Brut” level dry. The golden color and tiny bubbles are delightful to look at and the creamy, round, mouthfeel feels great on your palate. The flavors of ripe pear, yellow apple and stone fruit core and a generous burst of toasted hazelnut are yummy and sustain nicely on the broad, dry, finish. Just plain fun to drink and priced to be drinkable whenever thirsty.
