Lagrein is one of Italy’s best red wine grapes, although it hides in the valley’s of the Dolomites, so it’s not as well known. It probably emerged near Trento as a grandchild of Syrah sometime in the 16th century and it’s most successful sites are lower hillside vineyards near Bolzano. Which is where the Benedictine Brothers of Muri-Greis grow this!
I first tasted this in Paris last winter and the note I wrote then isn’t at all bad: “This is outstanding with big, big, black fruit and a plump feel before the tannins come up to give the wine shape and drive. A bit of earth and black pepper. Hard not to swallow this.” Today I’d add that it shows the signature texture of Lagrein, gliding like silk on entry before broadening to a plush, velvet, feel in the middle and then finishing with a squirt of red berry and blood orange juice to make your mouth water and break into a grin.
For You If: You enjoy silky/velvet wines like warm climate Pinot Noir or Merlot (and you SHOULD like Merlot. It’s good. Really); you want an Italian red’s food-friendly structure that’s easy enough to sip solo.
Not For You If: You’re looking for loads of earthiness or tannic grip – this doesn’t do the leather thing Sangiovese often does and finishes smooth and easy.
"The 2022 Lagrein opens with a burst of confectionary spices, violet pastille and licorice. This sweeps across the palate with textures of pure silk and ripe wild berry fruits, all guided by brisk acidity. It finishes with violet and lavender inner floral tones, juicy and mouth-watering, as a hint of blood orange resonates."
