Lower ABV Ciliegiolo is probably a Tuscan native, playing a minor, Sangiovese-softening, role in the traditional Chianti cocktail. In Umbria, though, it shines solo in the hands of Leonardo Bussoletti. Big aromas of crushed red raspberry, rose petal and wild herb lead to a fleshy, fresh, palate of ripe raspberry fruit and a dash of black pepper. Soft tannins and 13% alcohol make this an easy solo sipper with or without a chill but it’s hearty and flavorful enough to pair up with lasagna or salami. A bit like Mencia and Grenache had a baby that thrives under the warm Umbrian sun.
For You If: You enjoy lighter reds that are full of fruit and flavor and have plenty of satisfyingly present mouthfeel – nothing “thin” here; you’re after something a bit more hearty and less peachy than rosé to drink cool and a summer afternoon.
Not For You If: You want your red to show oak spice – all steel here – or firm, grippy, tannins; you prefer a “heavy” red – this is hearty, not heavy.
