Greves is the largest 1er Cru in Beaune and one of the best (including the central portion known as Vigne d'Enfant Jésus). As the name suggests, the soil here is broken up by lots of limestone gravel which creates outstanding drainage and forces the vines to dig deep for nutrients and water. Pascal Maillard makes about 800 cases per year from his small plot here. After hand harvest, the bunches of Pinot Noir are sorted to remove any with imperfect grapes and then go into the fermenter for 15 days before spending 18 months in 40% new French oak.
Dark, rich and powerful always come up in my notes on Pascal's Beaune Greves, but I’ve never written “silky power” before. And yet that’s the best way to describe this stunning 2020. An attractive earthy meatiness is already showing to complement the very deeply black cherry and raspberry fruit with terrific accents of bramble, roasted meat and more. The fruit is so delectable and tannins so super-fine that I wouldn't blame anyone for just drinking this right now. If you can wait 2-3 years, though, you'll be rewarded with an even silkier power and more dark, beefy, complexity through 2035.
For You If: Pinot Noir for lamb, beef, wild mushrooms is what you’re after; you like your Pinot dark and earthy; you’re up for giving a wine time in decanter or cellar to show its very best.
Not For You If: You’re after “smooth” – this is “silky” but still has firm grip on the close; you want the generosity of a ripe basket of berries vs the savory complexity of autumn leaves.
