Like most great wines, the secret to Quilceda Creek Cabernet’s 40+ year track record of greatness lies not in the winery, but in the vineyards. And mainly in the site that’s made up the backbone of this wine for 30 years, Champoux Vyd in the Horse Heavan Hills AVA due south of Yakima on the banks of the Columbia River. Planted by Don Mercer in the 1970s and early 1980s and farmed by Paul Champoux for 30+ years, the site is the coolest slice of this otherwise very warm AVA.
And Quilceda Creek owns around 75% of the vineyard today in the coolest spots of all. In the foothills above the river at 600-800 feet, the warmth of Champoux's due south exposition is balanced by a flood of cool air each night from the higher hills to the north. The result is fruit with thick skins and loads of color and tannin from steady winds, deep ripeness from summer sun and fresh, vibrant, acids locked in by 15-20 degree drops in temperature at night. The results are always outstanding, accessible for early tasting and built to improve for decades.
“The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a lush, silky, rich, round nose with fresh and ripe notes that seduce and delight. Full-bodied, fresh and yet still tight, the wine offers a balanced structure and lifting tannins that elevate the mid-palate followed by juicy, fruit-forward layers and delightful oak spices. The Cabernet continues to show its depth and breadth, compounding its natural beauty. The Cabernet lingers on the ever-evolving, food-friendly finish and will benefit from another two years of bottle aging. The wine rested for 22 months in 100% new French oak.”
“Beautiful fruit concentration with blackberries, blackcurrants, dark chocolate and red licorice. Encompassing and wide on the palate. Waves of plush, finely grained tannins come through, pushing the depth and unveiling dark fruit that is ripe and delicious. Salty undertones, too. Beautiful now, but better after 2026.”
